“I never used Excel at work but I saw other people making pretty graphs and thought, ‘I could probably draw with that, graphics software is expensive but Excel comes pre installed in most computers, and it has more functions and is easier to use than [Microsoft] Paint.”

says 73-year old spreadsheet artist Tatsuo Horiuchi.

Horiuchi started gaining attention when he entered an Excel Autoshape Art Contest in 2006. His masterpieces left the judges astonished considreing them to be far-superior than the other entries. After achieving first place Horiuchi went on to create work that has been acquired by his local Gunma Museum of Art.

Seems like Horiuchi also tried to work with Microsoft Word but it didn’t offer the same flexibility that Excel did.
