snail LED timelapse

To study the transmission of lungworm from snails to dogs a team of researchers from the Ecology department at the University of Exeter, lead by Dr. Dave Hodgson, attached LEDs and UV paint to hundreds of live snails. By tracking their speed and patterns of movement at night the team hope to shed some light how the parasitic nematode worms infects its victims, though the assumption is accidental ingestion.

Dogs in the UK are facing potentially fatal lungworm infections, how the organisms make the leap from snails to dogs is in the first place is still open to debate although the assumption is accidental ingestion.
